Few venues in the world possess the beauty of the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, an architectural jewel of Catalan Modernism and the only concert hall declared a World Heritage by UNESCO (4 December 1997).
The Palau was built between 1905 and 1908 by the modernist architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner as the headquarters of the Orfeó Català. The building is located in the Sant Pere district, one of the most beautiful areas of Barcelona.
Its concert hall, one of the most unique in the world, is a reference for symphonic and choral music in the country. Presided by the organ on stage and with a central skylight representing the sun, the room has natural light and is packed with figures and representations, such as the muses surrounding the stage, the Wagner walkyries that emerge from the ceiling, a bust of Anselm Clavé on one side and one of Beethoven on the other, and various elements of nature such as flowers, palm trees or fruits.
And in this dream space, where great works have been premiered over its more than 100 years, the choir El León de Oro, directed by Marco Antonio García de Paz, will debut on Monday, February 10, with the program “Cadere ad inferos: The dialogue of souls”, an intense and moving proposal that explores the struggle between heaven and hell, condemnation and redemption. Through masterpieces of the Hispanic Renaissance polyphony, with compositions by Tomás Luis de Victoria, Francisco Guerrero and Alonso Lobo, the audience will be able to enjoy the richness of sound and the depth of interpretation that have made El León de Oro a coral reference.
The website of the Palau de la Música Catalana says: “The Asturian choir El León de Oro has long since earned a place on its own merits in the Spanish choral scene, especially following the exploration of the repertoire of the Renaissance, collaboration with prestigious directors and winning awards in various competitions. Making his debut at the Palau de la Música, it will present a program with works by Guerrero, Lobo and Victoria that will allow us to enjoy all the nuances of this vocal ensemble created more than twenty years ago”.
