The second session of the Opera & Cinema series at the Granada International Festival of Music and Dance turns its gaze toward Italian verismo with Pagliacci, Leoncavallo’s masterpiece, which immerses us in the intense and tragic emotions of circus performers and whose Prologue contains what is almost a true manifesto of the new verismo style. The cinematic complement is also a luxury: The Circus (1928), the last silent film by Charles Chaplin, to which German composer Arthur Kay added music. The ensembles from the Young Performers Program of the Regional Government of Andalusia — that is, the OJA (Andalusian Youth Orchestra) and the Young Choir, the latter supplemented by the OCG Choir — will be responsible for the performance of the program, which will feature an operatic conductor, Madrid-born Guillermo García-Calvo, and a specialist in film music, especially that of Chaplin, Timothy Brock.
